Generations of artists mix the influence of nature and nurture as they exhibit alongside talented family members
It is true that artistic talent often runs in the family. Whether due to genetics or environment, or a combination thereof, many artists are acutely aware that their creative spark is shared among elder and younger family members.
Our upcoming art exhibit explores the common artistic talents of a half dozen Chicago area families.
Some of the subject families center on parents who have directly influenced and worked collaboratively with their children, shaping their love for art making from an early age while continuing to pursue their own artistic practice. Others feature multiple generations creating independently and, initially, without knowledge of the artistic expressions of their relatives.
Unlike most group and gallery exhibitions, “Family” disregards any commonality of subject matter or medium. The result is an extremely eclectic mixture of artwork that focuses on familial relationships and how artistic tradition is passed down from one generation to the next.
Each participating family features 2 to 3 artists, ranging in age from 3 to 84. For some, this will mark the first public appearance of their artwork. Biographic information on each family and artist will narrate for the audience how their individual talents have evolved throughout their lives.
“Family” opens with an artists’ reception on Saturday, July 13 from 5-9pm. All are welcome to attend, meet the artists and celebrate a shared love for artistic expression.
The exhibition will run for three weeks. Following the July 13 opening, viewings are available on Saturday, July 20 and Saturday, July 27 from 1-4pm.
Do you come from a family of artists? Does your child share in your artistic interests? Did your talent inspire another family member to create?
